Mountain Women Farmers Anthology: Call for Submissions

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS for mountain women farmers and gardeners:

Send submissions to amyleannrichardson@gmail.com

Send up to 5 poems or prose up to 3,000 words. DEADLINE: May 15, 2025

Please include in the body of your email your connection to Central Appalachia and agricultural practices, and attach your submission as a Word doc or PDF.

I am seeking submissions for a new anthology that amplifies the voices of mountain women farmers and gardeners to be published by University Press of Kentucky. This collection will celebrate the resilience, wisdom, and connection to the land that define the experience of growing food in the mountains of Central Appalachia.

Who Can Submit: I invite women who farm, garden, or work the land in any capacity in Central Appalachia, particularly those from Eastern Kentucky, to submit their written work. This anthology seeks to honor the experiences of all women who cultivate the land, whether through farming, gardening, or food preservation.

What I Am Looking For: I welcome diverse forms of writing that reflect the many ways women engage with the land, food, and community. Possible submissions include, but are not limited to essays, autobiographical stories, poetry, reflections on the practice of farming, gardening, and land stewardship, stories of overcoming challenges in rural life, narratives that celebrate traditions of foodways and sustainability, and/or writing that explores the intersection of gender, place, and agriculture.

Recent Updates from Amy Le Ann Richardson

Hello, friends and readers!

It’s been a while since I’ve updated this space, but I’m excited to share some news and reflections with you all. It’s been a busy few years, full of writing, creativity, and connection. As I reflect on where I’ve been and where I’m going, I’m grateful for all the support I’ve received from my readers, fellow writers, and community members.

Publications & Projects

I’m thrilled to announce the release of my full poetry collection, Out of Places (Pine Row Press, 2025). This has been a long journey, and I can’t wait for you to experience it. My chapbook Who You Grow Into (Finishing Line Press, 2024) has been out for a year now, and I am still so proud of this project. The cover features a beautiful painting by my daughter, Thelia, and it’s been such a joy to see this work come to life.

Additionally, I’m honored to have my poetry included in Troublesome Rising, edited by Melissa Helton (University Press of Kentucky, 2024), as well as Native Fruit: Poetry and Fine Art Inspired by the Pawpaw, edited by Stephanie Kendrick (Sheila-Na-Gig, 2024). You can also find my poem “Etched Into the Earth” in The Nature of Our Times: Poets for Science, which is a collaborative effort to raise awareness about environmental issues.

Other Projects and Appearances

2024 has been a year of exciting growth. In addition to my written work, I’ve been involved in community projects and have been honored to read in several new spaces. I also had the privilege of participating in Lexington Poetry Month again last year, and I’m grateful for the chance to connect with fellow poets and readers.

While writing and publishing remain at the heart of my work, I’ve continued to find inspiration in my life on the family farm in Carter County, Kentucky. Between tending to the land and my ongoing environmental advocacy, I’m always finding new ways to weave these experiences into my creative life.

Looking Ahead

I’m working on new projects that I look forward to sharing with you in the future. As always, thank you for your ongoing support, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to connect!

Stay tuned for more updates and thank you for visiting!

Warmly,
Amy

Preorder WHO YOU GROW INTO through 12/15

Left: book cover Right: the author

My upcoming chapbook is now available for pre-order. I am so proud to have one of my daughter Thelia’s paintings as cover art.

Please buy my book! And please share!

So much gratitude for everyone who has already preordered, and many thanks to those who have shared and told others about it.

As so many of you know, pre-sales are the best way to support writers because they determine the success of the book, and in many cases (like mine) they also determine the percentage of royalties the author is paid for the book’s lifetime.

Please keep sharing, and if you’re planning to buy my book, now is the best time. I appreciate your support and would be thrilled to sign it for you when it comes out. 💚🌱

Hello

Creating a new website is a challenging adventure for me, but here I am. I am excited about my upcoming chapbook from Finishing Line Press titled Who You Grow Into, so I am stepping out of my comfort zone to create some new spaces online to share information and connect with others.

I also plan to share updates and information about upcoming workshops and events, and I want to share things that inspire me and help me keep making space for my creative practice.

I hope you will join me!
